Membership and welfare
Every resident doctor at UBTH is a member. Here is what the association does for you and what it asks of you, as set out in our constitution.
Who is a member
Every registered medical and dental practitioner below the rank of consultant employed by UBTH is an official member of ARD UBTH. Membership comes with your appointment, and your annual dues are deducted from your salary at source.
Members employed by other bodies pay their dues by banker’s standing order. Membership ends on resignation, retirement, dismissal or transfer out of the hospital.
Your rights

- Any benefit that accrues to the ARD.
- Access to the social amenities the ARD provides.
Your obligations
- Pay your annual dues and any levies the association approves.
- Serve in any capacity the association appoints you to.
- Attend General Assembly meetings.
- Abide by the constitution.
Standing with members
The constitution commits the association to be present at members’ important moments.
Bereavement
When a member dies, the ARD sends at least 20 official delegates to the funeral. When a member loses a parent, sibling or child, the ARD sends delegates and gives the member a token sum of not less than 20 times their monthly dues.
Weddings
When invited, the ARD sends at least 20 delegates, a wedding card and a gift, and gives a token sum of not less than 10 times the member’s monthly dues. When both partners are members, each receives it.
Childbirth
When told of a birth, the ARD gives a token sum of not less than twice the member’s monthly dues, to each parent if both are members.
Welfare Committee
Chaired by the Vice President, with the Academic and Social Secretaries as members, the committee looks after members’ wellbeing between these moments.
Club House, Lounge and sport
ARD Club House and Lounge
The association’s own spaces in the hospital, run day to day by the Club House Secretary and a management committee that reports on their accounts every quarter.
Annual sports week
The Sports Secretary organises a sports week every year before the AGM, with trophies and prizes to compete for. See events
Need the association’s help?
If you face harassment, assault or any threat to your safety, dignity or rights while on duty, tell the executive council straight away. The constitution entitles every financial member to the association’s support.
